20 warning and comforting Bible verses about divorce, adultery and remarriage

Bible has a lot to say about divorce, adultery and remarriage. However, these topics are mostly misunderstood by a lot of Christians, particularly if you do not look at these things in the light of New Testament and Redemption. On the one hand, we have a lot of warning verses regarding divorce, adultery and remarriage. On the other, we see God’s unfailing love and forgiveness for those who repent after sinning. Take as an example the story of David and Bathsheba. Do not forget that it was the Old Testament. God would accept repentance back then too. So much more we can trust in his forgiveness now. Look at Jesus who forgives the lady that was brought to him by Pharisees. He forgave. He also made it clear that all of us have sinned one way or another. So, if you have sinned, go to Jesus and tell him about it. Repent and you will be forgiven. Praise God for his mercy. God bless you.

1. Isaiah 50:1
„This is what the LORD says: “Where is your mother’s certificate of divorce with which I sent her away? Or to which of my creditors did I sell you? Because of your sins you were sold; because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.“

2. Jeremiah 3:1
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and marries another man, should he return to her again? Would not the land be completely defiled? But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers— would you now return to me?” declares the LORD.“

3. Jeremiah 3:8
„I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.“

4. Malachi 2:16
“The man who hates and divorces his wife,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “does violence to the one he should protect,” says the LORD Almighty. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful.“

5. Matthew 1:19
„Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.“

6. Matthew 5:32
„But I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, makes her the victim of adultery, and anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.“

7. Matthew 19:8

8. Matthew 19:9

9. 1 Corinthians 7:12
„To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.“

10. 1 Corinthians 7:13
„And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.“

11. Exodus 20:14
“You shall not commit adultery.“

12. Proverbs 6:32
„But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.“

13. Jeremiah 3:6
„During the reign of King Josiah, the LORD said to me, “Have you seen what faithless Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree and has committed adultery there.“

14. Jeremiah 3:8
„I gave faithless Israel her certificate of divorce and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear; she also went out and committed adultery.“

16. Jeremiah 29:23

17. Matthew 5:28
„But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.“

18. Matthew 15:19
„For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.“

19. John 8:3-11
The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.
But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.
At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. 10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”
11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

20. Romans 13:9
„The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
